UKZN Accounting expert Professor Bomi Nomlala has been appointed as a member of the Thekwini Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College Council.

His appointment as an external council member is in accordance with section 10(4)(b) of the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006 as amended (CET Act). The appointment was made by former Minister of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Dr Blade Nzimande, early in June 2024.

Nomlala is an Associate Professor in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance (SAEF) and the Director of Self-funded Teaching Programmes in the same School. He has over 15 years of auditing education experience and was awarded his PhD in Accounting by UKZN in 2019.

As the Ministerial appointee and external council member, one of the priority tasks awaiting Nomlala and other council members is to have a fully constituted council. They will be required to assist the Chief Accounting Officer/College Principal with the appointment of an additional four external members in accordance with section 10(6) of the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006 as amended; and one external member, Donor, in terms of section of 10(4)(d); and ensuring that the internal council members are appointed by their respective constituencies.

Nomlala is up to the tasks ahead as he brings to the Council a wealth of experience as an active contributor to SAEF and broader University structures including committees such as Higher Degrees and Research; Sustainability Diversity through Inclusion; Self-Funded Teaching Programmes; School Board; School Management Committee; and Chair of UKZN Pension and Provident Fund. He is a member of prestigious professional bodies such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

Congratulating Nomlala on his appointment, Mr Amanuel Garza, Director of TVET Colleges Management and Governance Support, said: ‘The Minister and the nation are putting their trust in you to carry out your oversight responsibilities with the highest ethical standards and professionalism.’

Nomlala values the recognition and trust of DHET and views his appointment as a testament to the hard work he has put in towards the promotion of transformation in the Higher Education sector over the years. He looks forward to a national induction for all Ministerial appointees to be held in Johannesburg.

The Dean and Head of SAEF, Professor Mabutho Sibanda, is pleased with Nomlala’s appointment as he is confident that he will apply what he has learned from the Council to his teaching and research, which will also enrich his students. ‘Bomi is an accomplished academic professional and I strongly believe he will represent both the School and the University well,’ commented Sibanda.
