The School of Accounting, Economics, and Finance (SAEF) Mentoring Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was launched in 2020 with support from the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA). The goal of the programme is to ensure the holistic wellbeing of mentees to equip them for academic success, and to provide them with the life skills needed to thrive after graduation.
Originally created to assist students facing academic challenges, the programme has evolved into a voluntary initiative open to all SAEF students from their second year onwards. Whether a student is struggling academically, battling with personal issues or simply looking to enrich their university experience, the SAEF mentoring programme is designed to empower students and to help them succeed.
Engage in a one-on-one online session every two weeks with a dedicated mentor. Discuss your challenges, receive personalised support, and get encouragement and guidance to overcome obstacles.
Participate in online group sessions led by a project assistant (PA) and mentor. These sessions include fellow students who have enrolled in the mentoring programme and cover essential topics such as time management, study skills, and post-graduation plans.
Mentors and PAs will help you to embrace the student experience, enhance your academic journey and unlock your full potential.
Navigating your UKZN journey can be an exciting and challenging experience, that’s why our mentors are here to offer you a guidance for your academic and personal development.

Mentors must have a completed postgraduate qualification in Accounting, Economics or Finance and a sound academic record. When appointing a mentor, we look for an individual who is empathetic, motivational and dedicated to working with each mentee to help them develop an appropriate Plan for Success.
Mentors need to have a good work ethic, excellent time management skills, and they need to be committed to fulfilling the objectives of the Mentoring Programme. Mentors are appointed at the start of the academic year. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please
