About BRU

Purpose​​

To promote research and knowledge sharing in the field of business rescue, financial distress prediction, insolvency rehabilitation and turnaround management of companies.​

Values

The Unit is premised on three core values which are trust, honesty and integrity.

Mission

To build capacity in the field of business rescue, financial distress prediction, rehabilitation mechanisms and turnaround management in order to promote business sustainability.

Advisory Board

The Unit has an Advisory Board comprising experts from the Accounting and Law professions, industry, and academia. The Board is Chaired by a member external to the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The board provides oversight and approval of the Unit’s budgets, strategic direction, and monitoring and evaluation.

Scientific Council

BRU hosts academic and practitioner conferences and publishes special editions from reputable journals across the globe. To achieve excellence, BRU has a scientific council that advises on conferences and publications. The Council is chaired by an external member to the Unit.

Executive Management Committee

The Unit’s executive membership committee comprises of six members and is governed by the provisions of the Unit’s Constitution as approved by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Senate. The committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Unit including planning and monitoring and evaluation.

Mandate

Scholarship of discovery

BRU is actively involved in research and innovation in the broader field of business rescue. To achieve this mandate, the Unit produces relevant research and supervises and mentors postgraduate students pursuing business rescue related topics to promote continued research. To broaden the scope of research and innovation, BRU supports and encourages its members to attend conferences for information sharing purposes and to gain advanced knowledge of theoretical and practical issues guiding formal and informal debt restructuring procedures.

Human Capacity Development

BRU acknowledges that emancipation of practitioners and development of new skills enhances business sustainability. Therefore, the Unit provides workshops, seminars and short courses that are aimed at empowering the business community through continuous sharing of business rescue knowledge. Most of these workshops and seminars are a collaboration of industry and sector experts.

BRU believes in capacitating the community through targeted community engagement projects, within the national, African and global context

Members

Professor Mabutho Sibanda

Professor of finance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and has vast experience in academic management and leadership. He is the Dean and head of school.

Professor Raj Rajaram

Chartered Accountant by profession and also a professor of Managerial Accounting and Finance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He holds a doctorate in Accounting.

Professor Paul Muzindutsi

Professor of finance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is a prolific researcher and strategist. He has expertise in financial risk management, impact assessment and bankruptcy prediction.

Dr Bomi Nomlala

Ethics and auditing professional with vast experience both in academia and industry. His corporate philosophy is based on ethics and leadership, and he is also a critical thinker.

Zamanguni Gumede

Chartered Accountant who also lectures Advanced Taxation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Ms Kajal Ramnanun

Chartered Global Management Accountant. She is a lecturer at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Managerial Accounting & Finance and is actively involved in post graduate business rescue research.
